Job Summary

The City of New York is seeking a highly experienced and innovative attorney to serve as General Counsel under the direction of the Business Integrity Commission's Commissioner and Chair. The General Counsel will have wide latitude to utilize their legal knowledge, judgment, and experience to provide expert advice and guidance on all legal matters related to the Commission's jurisdiction.

Key Responsibilities

• Acting as the principal legal advisor to the Commissioner and Chair, the Commission itself, senior executive staff, and managers on all legal matters related to the Commission's jurisdiction;
• Supervising agency attorneys and Legal Unit support staff;
• Representing the Commission at meetings involving legal and policy issues with the Mayor's Office, other governmental agencies, and other entities;
• Providing advice and recommendations on questions of law, fact, and administrative policy;
• Reviewing contracts and other documents;
• Ensuring the agency's compliance with applicable law, rules, and policies;
• Reviewing, modifying, and streamlining various inter- and intra-agency procedures;
• Accepting additional assignments as needed, including, but not limited to, planning, coordinating, and conducting special projects;
• Acting as a senior member of the agency's intergovernmental relations team.

Requirements

• Admission to the New York State Bar;
• Four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar, eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys, in an administrative, managerial, or executive capacity, or performing highly complex and significant legal work;
• Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.

• Ability to organize, delegate, and establish meaningful goals and effective working relationships with employees and the public;
• Strong interpersonal, leadership, and management skills and experience managing other attorneys and legal staff;
• Intergovernmental and operational experience;
• Commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality on highly sensitive matters.
