Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Technologist to join our team at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. As a Medical Technologist, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality laboratory services to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Schedule and prioritize laboratory testing to meet provider demands and accommodate emergency testing requirements.
  • Evaluate requested procedures to determine specimen suitability and request new patient specimens as necessary.
  • Prepare reagents and primary reagent reference materials, and select, perform, evaluate, and monitor the performance of non-routine and specialized test procedures.
  • Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain single and multi-channel laboratory analyzers, and perform quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products.
  • Evaluate and recommend new tests to be incorporated into the laboratory testing menu, and confer with laboratory section chiefs/pathologists to determine requirements for non-standard tests.
  • Instruct providers, residents, nursing staff, and others in laboratory specimen requirements for specific laboratory tests, and work as a senior member of the laboratory testing team to assess test results in relation to patient medical conditions.
  • Practice laboratory safety to reduce contamination and infection to patients, staff, and self, and maintain records and files of tests performed on patients.
  • Properly identify patient specimens through the use of two patient identifier requirements, and be responsible for the inventory and stocking of all laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Operate highly sophisticated computer-controlled multi-channel analyzers, troubleshoot laboratory analyzers, and interact with vendor technical staff in person or by telephone.
  • Have computer skills to look up, accession, test, and verify results in the VA VistA laboratory program, and assume various rotating schedules as determined by the section supervisor and section chief.
  • Consult with clinicians or review patient clinical history in CPRS, compare test results from other sections of the lab to support observations, and perform special projects as delegated by the Section Chief or Supervisor.
  • Conduct training and instruction for new employees and students, maintain competency certification for skills required, and interact with Reference Laboratories to schedule testing and transport of difficult-to-obtain samples.
Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: MTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
  • Education and/or Experience Combination: A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related science, and completion of a medical technology clinical practice program.
  • Certification: Candidates must have either (1) or (2) below: (1) Candidates must currently possess the appropriate certification as a MT, MLS, or CLS given by the ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT.
  • Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates: GS-7 (Entry Level) Experience: None beyond the basic requirements. Assignments: Employees at this level serve in an entry-level MT career development position practicing under close supervision of an MT at or above the full performance level.
