Position Overview:
The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a skilled individual to fill the role of Power Systems Operations Manager within our Facilities and Site Services division. This position operates on a 4x10 schedule, allowing for a work-life balance with every Friday off.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilize your expertise in power grid operations to provide guidance, technical assistance, and coordination for teams involved in planning, scheduling, outage management, dispatching, and executing tasks related to the INL 138kV power transmission and distribution network.
- Analyze intricate operational challenges, assess various solutions, and formulate well-founded recommendations to ensure safe and efficient work practices that minimize downtime.
- Establish and uphold standards for exceptional customer service while collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Work alongside the Power Management Department Manager to assess the overall impact on laboratory operations and devise solutions to adapt to evolving lab objectives, DOE Orders, and customer needs.
- Engage in performance management initiatives within the department, fostering career development opportunities for team members.
- Implement strict safety protocols to prohibit work near energized electrical distribution equipment unless absolutely necessary, ensuring risk is minimized through established safety controls.
- Represent the Power Management Group on Employee Safety Teams, contributing to a culture of safety.
- Serve as a qualified Power Management Duty Manager, providing round-the-clock support for the power Dispatcher and assisting in emergency response situations.
- Oversee the development and management of budgets, schedules, and performance metrics for the organizational unit.
- Collaborate effectively with subordinate supervisors and cross-functional teams.
- Formulate long-term strategies and load forecasting for the INL power grid system.
- Mentor engineers, planners, and operators to enhance their professional growth.
- Supervise the operation of the 138kV transmission and distribution system to ensure reliable power delivery.
- Ensure accurate allocation of the monthly power bill among users through effective metering operations.
- Maintain regular communication with the power utility regarding changes in power rates.
- Regularly update operations policies and procedures, providing ongoing training to personnel.
- Collaborate with the department manager to manage the department budget and plan for future expansion.
- Coordinate maintenance activities and outages with power utility companies.
- Provide oversight and management for projects executed by Power Management engineering and craft personnel, ensuring adherence to budgetary and scheduling goals.
- Comply with INL, State, and Federal policies and standards, including cybersecurity, OSHA, FERC/NERC, NESC, and NEC.
- Ensure that Power Management system drawings are accurate and updated regularly.
- Maintain up-to-date Arc Flash calculations for the INL Transmission and Distribution systems in accordance with industry standards.
- Coordinate the integration and operation of power generation, including distributed energy resources, into the INL power system.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Facilities Engineering, or a related field, along with 9 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with 6 years of progressive managerial and technical experience in power system operations, engineering, and planning.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, requiring U.S. Citizenship.
- Willingness to participate in rotational 24x7 Power Management Duty Manager assignments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional Engineer License or advanced degree.
- Experience in Public Utility Operations and Engineering.
- Experience in high voltage transmission and distribution operations, maintenance, or design.
Compensation and Benefits:
- The target pay range for this position is $100,540 - $155,973 annually, with a full pay range of $89,652 - $215,160, determined by factors such as education and relevant experience.
