Position Overview
The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center's Pediatrics Department integrates a network of healthcare facilities, clinics, and community services, all connected through education and research aimed at applying advanced medical practices to enhance the health of children in New Mexico. The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology division is one of the two COG affiliated pediatric practices in the state. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage in various clinical, academic, research, and community environments.
Role Responsibilities
The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology division is in search of a full-time Specialty Nurse dedicated to caring for pediatric oncology patients. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and executing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient nursing care plans.
- Organizing patient treatment strategies and preparing for clinic consultations.
- Managing communications from families, patients, and healthcare providers, both within and outside the organization.
- Coordinating patient care with various specialists and arranging follow-up appointments post-discharge.
- Collaborating with Clinical Researchers on clinical trials.
- Providing education to patients and families regarding their conditions and treatment protocols.

Employment Conditions
To qualify for this position, candidates must possess:
- A valid New Mexico driver's license.
- Current CPR certification.
- Compliance with annual TB and rubella screenings.
- Ability to undergo a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related clinical field, along with a minimum of one year of relevant experience.
Licensure: Candidates must hold a State of New Mexico Licensed Registered Nurse credential or have pending licensure as documented by temporary licensure.
Completed degrees from accredited institutions exceeding the minimum educational requirement may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have:
- Experience in pediatric nursing.
- Familiarity with chronic illness management.
- More than one year of recent nursing experience.
- Skills in blood draws, IV initiation (preferably in pediatric settings), medication knowledge, nursing assessments, and triage.
- Experience in outpatient case management.
- Proficiency in Spanish.
