POSITION SUMMARY


Under the clinical supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for delivering patient care through the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This role also involves directing and guiding patient education activities and supporting ancillary personnel while upholding professional nursing standards. The use of electronic medical record systems is integral to the role.

  • Conduct assessments of the physical, psychological, and psychosocial aspects of patients within the healthcare unit and, when necessary, in housing units.
  • Utilize knowledge of various illnesses, injuries, and diseases to gather health histories and perform assessments.
  • Provide leadership to RNs, LPNs, MAs, CNAs, and other nursing staff in relation to medical care.
  • Monitor all patients receiving medications, maintaining accurate charts and records.
  • Employ therapeutic communication skills and effective interviewing techniques to gather pertinent historical information and make appropriate referrals.
  • Deliver professional nursing services competently and in accordance with established standards, protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Make timely referrals to appropriate healthcare providers based on diagnostic tests, lab results, and nursing diagnoses.
  • Contact physicians for medication orders as necessary to ensure continuity of care.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacology, including drug reactions, interactions, side effects, cautions, and contraindications.
  • Administer medications safely and efficiently, adhering to prescribed orders and established standards.
  • Participate in training for facility personnel on mental health topics as required by NCCHC and ACA standards.
  • Adhere to correctional facility policies and procedures.
  • Operate within the limits of the State Nurse Practice Act, Code of Ethics for Nurses, and facility policies and standards.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned after receiving the necessary training.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
The following qualifications are the minimum required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

LICENSURE:
Current, valid Illinois State Registered Nursing License

CERTIFICATION:
Current CPR Certification-Accepted:
  • American Red Cross
  • American Heart Association
  • American Safety and Health Institute

EDUCATION:
Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Minimum one (1) year of clinical experience; correctional nursing experience is a plus.
