Job Summary: The IRC in Salt Lake City is committed to supporting newly arrived refugees and low-income individuals in achieving self-sufficiency through securing entry-level jobs, progressing towards living wage opportunities, acquiring essential financial management skills, building assets, and launching small enterprises. The Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) program at IRC SLC provides group-based English language instruction tailored for adult refugees with varying levels of proficiency. The VESL Instructor is a key player in this initiative, responsible for delivering engaging lessons, developing, and enhancing a curriculum that effectively promotes the acquisition of English language skills essential for employability. Working closely with the Education Programs Supervisor, IRC Technical Advisors, and other team members, the VESL Instructor is crucial in ensuring that clients achieve their personal and professional goals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts the Vocational English as a Second Language classes for newcomers to the IRC SLC office using established curricula.
  • Facilitates the development of core English language competencies necessary for securing and maintaining employment and achieving self-sufficiency.
  • Evaluates student progress through assessments; tracks and reports attendance as required.
  • Creates lesson plans and instructional materials as necessary.
  • Adheres to established policies and procedures for recording classroom attendance and other data required by funding sources.
  • Collaborates with the Workforce Development Supervisor, Employment Specialists, and other relevant staff through regular communication and participation in team meetings.
  • Engages in Workforce, VESL, and Education meetings, as well as staff development activities, when possible.
  • Stays informed on best practices, pedagogical methods, and strategies to engage adult ESL learners.
  • Complies with all agency policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • TESOL or TEFOL certification is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field is strongly preferred; a master's degree is advantageous.
  • Experience in teaching ESL is required; a minimum of 2 years of ESL teaching experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with lesson planning and delivering instruction that meets specific learning objectives using supporting curriculum.
  • Exhibits patience, flexibility, and reliability.
  • Effective communication skills in English are essential; knowledge of languages such as Kinyarwanda, Kiswahili, Dari/Farsi/Pashto, Spanish, or Arabic is a plus.
  • Experience with online instruction and learning is preferred.
  • Maintains accurate and timely records of student enrollment and participation.
  • A valid driver's license and insured vehicle are required.
  • Experience working with immigrant populations and adults is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with workforce and job training programs is advantageous.
  • Demonstrates initiative and the ability to work independently to address challenges.
  • Proven cultural competency and sensitivity in working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to bring creativity to the classroom and effectively teach students with varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and willing to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Work Environment:
  • A combination of standard office and remote work settings.
  • May require occasional weekend or evening work.
