Job Overview

Position Title: Engineering Support Technician I

POSITION SUMMARY

The objective of this role is to execute a range of routine to moderately complex clerical and developmental tasks that assist in the operations of the Greenville Water Engineering Department.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following tasks are typical for this position. The absence of specific statements regarding duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this role. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

  • Handles customer service responsibilities; answers incoming calls; welcomes walk-in clients; assists customers with inquiries, requests, and complaints; provides accurate information or directs questions to the appropriate staff member.
  • Completes work orders, informs relevant parties of the outcomes, and records readings from work orders.
  • Supports customer service, shop staff, plumbers, builders, account inquiries, water main, and plat information.
  • Reports customer service requests and emergencies to the appropriate field and/or administrative personnel; utilizes two-way radio to maintain communication with field staff.
  • Assists field staff with various technical concerns.
  • Maintains both computerized and physical records of departmental data; researches and updates records as necessary; generates updated reports and documentation; distributes as required. Researches plat cards and plats, and inputs data into the plat card database. Creates new cards and plats.
  • Issues and monitors work orders; schedules locates, inspections, taps, samples, etc.; keeps documentation of issued and completed work orders. Investigates various address and account issues.
  • Processes payments for services; calculates fees; records transactions, issues receipts, balances cash drawer with daily receipts report, and forwards revenues as appropriate.
  • Receives, reviews, processes, types, composes, and/or submits a variety of documents, including work orders, contracts, invoices, tap and meter orders, permits, memos, correspondence, notices, etc. Engages with customers regarding fire lines and contracts. Prepares contracts, mails, and scans documents.
  • Performs various general clerical tasks in support of Engineering Department operations, including but not limited to copying and filing documents, creating new files, reproducing blueprints, retrieving files for research, maintaining logs and lists, preparing mail, etc. All encroachments must be prepared, scanned, signed, copied, and mailed. When forms are returned and numbered, copies and scans are made.
  • Interacts and communicates with immediate supervisor, other supervisors/department heads, company personnel, City and County personnel, contractors, plumbers, sales representatives, customers, and the general public.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A High School Diploma or GED is required, supplemented by the following:

For Development Services Technician I: One (1) year of customer service or general clerical/office experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

For Development Services Technician II: A minimum of five (5) years of experience in engineering customer service; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
