Job Summary

The University of Michigan Medical School is seeking a Chief Department Administrator to join the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics. This is a unique opportunity to partner with the Department Chair and leadership team to drive strategic initiatives and manage departmental operations.

Responsibilities
  • Operational Accountability: Manage the department's financial performance, human resources, service agreements, research administration, space utilization, and educational administrative activities.
  • Leadership Competencies: Collaborate to create a shared vision, effectively communicate the vision, and inspire stakeholders to build consensus. Lead innovation and change through the application of lean thinking philosophy, tools, and techniques to increase operational efficiencies.
  • Collaboration and Inclusion: Collaborate and build inclusive relationships with stakeholders, model respect, recognition, helpfulness, and collaboration. Coach and develop others, and provide professional development support.
  • Culture of Accountability: Develop a culture of accountability, provide the team with strategic direction, prioritization, and support to achieve results. Identify problems and involve appropriate individuals to reach resolution.
Requirements
  • MBA, MS, MPH, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to present and gain acceptance of ideas and proposals.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated strength in verbal and written communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to be an effective leader in a complex and dynamic organization.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in managing research and grant activity and knowledge of pre- and post-award management and research compliance.
  • Experience in managing gift funds and other financial assets.
  • Experience in developing and preparing contracts and proposals.
