This role involves performing essential construction and maintenance tasks on water and gas infrastructure, including the operation of relevant construction machinery.

Additionally, the technician will be responsible for the installation and repair of conduits or underground facilities related to Communications, Electric, Gas, and Water utility services, as well as the identification of underground utility lines.

The Utility Construction Technician I operates under the general guidance of the Gas & Water Construction Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities:
- Locate and mark underground utility lines for water, gas, electric, and communications; respond to requests for joint meetings.


- Assist in the installation of water and gas lines as well as electric and communication conduits; operate construction equipment, machinery, and power tools; utilize line locators and leak detection devices.


- Adhere to safety protocols; maintain and repair fire hydrants; work as a certified joiner of polyethylene piping; perform routine water taps and assist with larger water and gas taps.


- Inspect the construction and maintenance of water and gas mains and services; document measurements and create location sketches as necessary; complete underground conduit installations for various departments; carry out general construction tasks and related duties as assigned.


- Maintain a positive work environment by communicating effectively and fostering good relationships with customers, colleagues, and management.


Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution.

Experience:
At least three years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of utility water and gas systems.

Certifications/Licenses:
Must be Gas Operator Qualified. A valid driver's license with a good driving record is required. Must possess a valid Iowa DOT Class A CDL with air brakes endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

Comprehensive understanding of the methods, materials, and techniques utilized in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water and gas mains; awareness of occupational hazards and necessary safety measures.

Ability to:

Demonstrate proficiency in operating related construction and excavation equipment; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.


Physical Requirements:


The physical demands for this position require the ability to lift at least 75 pounds occasionally, remain vigilant to ergonomic hazards, and possess the capability to climb ladders and/or stairs. The role involves working in challenging terrain and positions that may be awkward or difficult. A high level of physical activity is necessary. Accommodations for physical or mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

This position requires a hearing examination and a pulmonary lung function test, which is necessary for respirator use. A pre-employment drug screening and physical examination are mandatory.
