Job Summary

To provide a 24-hour emergency and non-emergency ambulance service with state-approved personnel. Secondary duties include maintaining up-to-date knowledge of Missouri Laws governing ambulances and personnel. Supportive of the Village's mission, values, and service/hospitality (PRIDE) expectations. Completes training as required by policy.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Administers basic life support to and transports sick or injured persons to medical facilities, working as a member of an emergency medical team.
  2. Responds to instructions from dispatchers and drives specifically equipped emergency vehicles to specified locations.
  3. Monitors communication equipment to maintain contact with dispatchers.
  4. Removes or assists in removing victims from the scene of accidents or catastrophes.
  5. Determines the nature and extent of illnesses or injuries, magnitude of catastrophes, and follows medical protocols or determines the need for additional assistance.
  6. Administers prescribed basic life support at the site of emergencies or in specially equipped vehicles, performing activities such as applying splints, administering oxygen, treating minor wounds or abrasions, and administering artificial resuscitation.
  7. Communicates with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facilities to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and arrange for the reception of victims at treatment facilities.
  8. Assists treatment center admitting personnel in obtaining and recording information related to victims' vital statistics and circumstances of emergencies.
  9. Maintains vehicles and medical and communication equipment and replenishes first-aid equipment and supplies.
  10. May assist professional medical personnel in emergency treatment administered at medical facilities.
  11. Adheres to all safety regulations and requirements.
  12. Handles stress well and gets along with others within the workplace and with customers outside the department.
  13. Maintains acceptable standards of workplace conduct.
Essential QualificationsEducation:

This position requires the level of education typically acquired by a course of study leading to a high school diploma or GED.

Licenses/Certifications:

Missouri State EMT-B and CPR Certifications are required. A Missouri Class E driver's license or equivalent is also required.

Knowledge and Skills:

Basic level keyboarding skills are required. The ability to maintain CEU hours required by current EMT and CPR certifications is also necessary. Experience with investigations of incidents and conflicts, experience using an ambulance, and experience using an oxygen tank, airways, suction equipment, respirator, and heart monitor are preferred.

The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, handbooks, and procedure manuals is required. The ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals is also necessary. Excellent customer service skills are required.

Special Working Conditions

The associate is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. The associate is subject to extreme cold temperatures, extreme heat, sufficient noise to cause shouting, vibration of the extremities or whole body, hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.

The associate is subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation. The associate is subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.

The associate frequently is in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia. The associate is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.

The associate is exposed to infectious diseases. The associate is required to function around individuals with challenged mental capacities. All associates may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.

Physical and Mental Demands

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Very Heavy Work – Exerting in excess of 100 lbs of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 lbs of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20lbs of force constantly to move objects.

The associate is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.

Climbing:

Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.

Balancing:

Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.

Standing:

Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.

Walking:

Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

Talking:

Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Hearing:

Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and making fine discriminations in sound.

Repetitive motions:

Making substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
