Position Overview

The Custer County Sheriff's Office is seeking a dedicated and certified full-time Deputy Sheriff to join our ranks. This position is available due to departmental growth and to fill existing vacancies. The starting salary for certified officers is competitive, with additional compensation for night shifts.

Compensation and Benefits: The role offers a starting wage of up to $26.45 per hour, along with a shift differential of $1.00 per hour for night shifts. Employees will enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Paid holidays

Each Deputy Sheriff will be assigned a patrol vehicle, and all necessary duty gear and uniforms will be provided by the department.

Community and Responsibilities

Custer County is renowned for its stunning landscapes, encompassing over 1500 square miles and bordering Wyoming. The area is rich in natural beauty, featuring attractions such as the Crazy Horse Memorial and extensive public lands, including state and national parks.

As a Deputy Sheriff, your responsibilities will include:

  • Enforcing local and state laws
  • Preventing and addressing crime and accidents
  • Serving legal processes
  • Promoting public safety through community engagement
  • Performing additional duties as assigned
Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Possession of a current South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission Certificate
  • Minimum age of 21 years
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation
  • No prior felony or domestic violence convictions
  • Valid driver's license and insurable driving history
  • Availability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays
