Job Title: Water Treatment Plant Operator

Join Seminole County, FL in a challenging and rewarding role as a Water Treatment Plant Operator. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining our water treatment facilities, ensuring the production of safe and clean drinking water for our community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate and maintain water treatment facilities, including ozone, ion exchange, and granular activated carbon treatment systems.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Florida Administrative Codes, laws, rules, standards, and permit requirements.
  • Perform daily operational procedures, laboratory and field analyses, and routine calibrations and maintenance to maintain optimal treatment process.
  • Observe, interpret, and document online data for process control and permit compliance.
  • Participate in making minor repairs to mechanical equipment and report major breakdowns and mechanical defects to their immediate supervisor.
  • Receives and distributes process chemicals, adheres to proper safety standards and procedures, and maintains safety equipment and related records.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair sodium hypochlorite facilities, including hypochlorite feed systems, dosing pumps, and associated piping and fittings.
  • Assist with maintaining daily plant logs, equipment data logs, process control records, and monthly operating reports.
  • Collect and submit data as required to assist with department operations, such as budget preparation and purchasing planning.
  • Train other staff members as required and coordinate with other departments, vendors, and contractors to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Maintain state-mandated professional qualifications by seeking out and completing approved C.E.U. courses.
  • Perform after-hours and on-call duties, respond to emergencies and other call-outs as directed, and respond to customer complaints and concerns.
  • Collect state-mandated system chemical and bacteriological samples, as well as other mandated samples.
  • Prepare routine paperwork and records using Microsoft Office programs and understand computer operations and data entry procedures as they pertain to operational needs.
  • Work with SCADA system to make operational changes to plant operating parameters, interpret data reported back by the SCADA system, and backwash ion exchange and carbon activated vessels.
  • Maintain remote facilities operations and security oversight via SCADA, video camera systems, and intrusion alarm systems.
  • Coordinate operational failures with the maintenance department or other agencies as may be required and coordinate security response with the sheriff's office, fire department, or other agencies as may be required.
  • Assist the maintenance staff with maintaining mechanical and/or electrical equipment and respond to both internal and external customers to resolve any issues that may arise.
  • Perform general cleaning duties to keep the plant(s) and work area clean and maintain hand-held and on-line analytical metering equipment.
  • Additional duties as may be assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid FL Department of Environmental Protection Water Treatment Plant Operator's License, Class "C", "B", or "A".
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and SCADA software; GIS software experience is a plus.
  • Considerable knowledge of standard water treatment practices and the rules and regulations of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, St. John's River Water Management District, and the Department of Health.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of pump operations and maintenance, well field operations, chlorination equipment operation and maintenance, and operation and calibration of laboratory and field analytical equipment.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Knowledge of chemistry as it applies to water treatment.
  • Ability to use highly technical computer applications.
  • Ability to use or repair small, medium, and heavy equipment or machinery.
