Electrical Engineering Department Manager Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to work on projects that enable the heart of our clients' business. As an Electrical Engineering Department Manager, you'll be accountable for schedule and technical quality of challenging engineering tasks, gaining familiarity with the client's expectations, scope, budget, and schedule.

Our multi-discipline, highly interactive team will produce designs for control systems for a variety of processes and develop options and optimizations for all aspects of the process control, instrumentation, and automation. As a passionate leader, you'll leverage your people management skills to help your team members discover what drives them, nurturing their purpose and guiding them forward.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the electrical department with minimal supervision.
  • Ensure the total expectations of the project deliverables are met, including quality expectations, schedules, and budgets.
  • Provide department staff forecasting on a regular basis and manage the department staff level to balance the number of resources with the amount of work.
  • Hire, recruit, and maintain the required skill sets to execute our work.
  • Evaluate employee performance and make recommendations for career advancement.
  • Monitor the quality of the work performed within the department and make design or corrective decisions as required.
  • Consult with Lead Engineers and Project Managers on technical problems and staffing requirements.
  • Assign department personnel to project teams and direct the work of those assigned as Lead Engineers.
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight to less experienced personnel as necessary.
  • Act as a mentor and coach, providing technical instruction as required.
  • Assist in project proposals by ascertaining scope, determining the required design budgets, and serving as an expert during proposal presentations.
  • Research and resolve technical challenges and other unusual design issues that affect one or more projects.
  • Work with others to incorporate code and safety requirements into designs.
  • Maintain effective communications with department members, operations management, and with clients.
  • Review and approve time sheets and expense reports for department personnel.
  • Represent the electrical department in weekly office management meetings and monthly project review meetings.
  • Drive growth and continuous improvement within Operations.
  • Business development and marketing responsibilities in practice area.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least 15 years of electrical experience desired; experience with industrial/cGMP manufacturing projects is preferred.
  • Experience using or familiarity with current design software (such as AutoCAD, SmartPlant, Revit, VISIO, Bluebeam; others) required.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) required.
  • Must have experience in leading the design on a variety of projects of different sizes.
  • Must have the ability to travel as needed by project requirements.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Forward thinking, eager to learn best practices, and contribute with innovative ideas.
  • Displayed ability to learn quickly and driven to broaden knowledge base.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a variety of teams, including multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Working knowledge of ACAD and REVIT.
  • Solid working knowledge of NFPA 70 (NEC).
  • Work collaboratively to achieve overall project delivery goals.
  • Advanced knowledge of PLC, DCS, and other controls applications.
  • Advanced knowledge using SmartPlant Instrumentation (InTools).

Ideally, you'll also have:

  • Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Passion for buildings and construction.
