Job Description:

A Medical Assistant plays a vital role in providing care to patients in an ambulatory clinic setting. This involves caring for patients with acute and chronic needs in the Wellington Neurosurgery Clinic. The Medical Assistant position for our office is more clerical and detail-oriented, focusing on tasks such as vitals, data entry, rooming patients, chart preparation, and supporting providers with orders.

Responsibilities:
  • Performs general administrative and patient care tasks in accordance with the Intermountain MGPSMA Scope of Practice and other established policies and procedures.
  • Communicates effectively and diplomatically within a multi-disciplinary care team.
  • Greets and prepares patients for healthcare providers while maintaining a positive and caring attitude.
  • Attends to patients' needs, coordinates care, administers care, and documents appropriately.
  • Ensures patient safety and protection of patient privacy rights by observing HIPAA regulations.
  • Obtains and records patient information, including vital signs, height, weight, allergies, current medications, medical history, and chief complaint.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • May be required to draw and collect blood samples and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Schedules patients for diagnostic testing and follow-up as appropriate to ensure completion of testing.
  • Communicates test results to patients and establishes a plan of care by phone or mail as directed by the provider.
  • Documents patient plans of care, tests, and examination results in the medical record as directed by the provider.
  • Prepares, cleans, and sterilizes instruments and maintains equipment; stocks patient exam rooms while maintaining cleanliness and organization, and disposes of contaminated items according to protocol.
  • Administers ordered medications and/or vaccines via oral, injection, topical, rectal, ophthalmic, and/or inhalant administration.
  • Escalates non-routine issues, questions, and/or concerns to the practice manager and/or healthcare provider(s).
  • Ensures safety checklists/quality controls are completed as required.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and composure with the ability to take appropriate action in questionable or emergency situations.
  • Promotes the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health and abides by service behavior standards.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Current BLS Certification is required upon hire or within 60 days of hire upon approval.
  • Three months of healthcare experience and phlebotomy experience.
  • Successful completion of initial MA onboarding within 90 days, annual skills fair, and in-services for site-specific tasks.
  • Ability to successfully function in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Successful completion of an Accredited National Certification Exam for Certified Medical Assistants (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
Work Environment:

The Medical Assistant will work in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment, interacting with patients, healthcare providers, and other staff members. The position requires strong communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a team setting.

Physical Requirements:

The Medical Assistant will be required to stand for extended periods, walk, and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. The position also requires manual dexterity to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.
