Role Overview: The Pharmacy Intern plays a crucial role in supporting the pharmaceutical care services at MercyOne Outpatient Pharmacies. This position involves various responsibilities, including the processing of prescriptions, preparation and distribution of medications, and conducting reviews of patient charts for essential information and audits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparing patient medication orders.
  • Deliver medications and intravenous admixtures to patient care areas.
  • Review patient medication administration records (MAR) and care plans to assess the need for medication returns.
  • Collect medication orders from nursing stations for processing.
  • Manage credits for returned medications and restock usable items.
  • Organize and file medication orders efficiently.
  • Prepare unit dose exchange envelopes.
  • Handle medication drawers and order files for patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Support pharmacists in conducting audits.
  • Complete assigned inspections of units.
  • Restock automated medication dispensing systems.
  • Enter stock requisitions for other departments.
  • Maintain tackle boxes and cart inserts, ensuring proper check-in and check-out.
  • Communicate inventory usage and ordering requirements.
  • Monitor medication expiration dates and notify pharmacists as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current enrollment in a pharmacy program or evidence of commitment to a pharmacy school.
  • Must be registered as a pharmacy intern with the State of Iowa upon hire or as a Technician in Training for a maximum of 12 months until eligible for Intern status.
  • Certification as a Pharmacy Technician is acceptable until Intern status is achieved.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within three months of hire, with the American Heart Association being the recognized credentialing body.
  • Completion of mandatory reporter training within three months of hire.
