Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, Lead

As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, Lead, you will play a critical role in performing diagnostic, therapeutic, and biopsy ultrasound procedures under the direct and indirect supervision of a physician section head. You will be responsible for orienting and training new personnel regarding subsection operations, as well as ensuring operational, technical, and patient care functions within Ultrasound on the Neighbor Islands.
Key Responsibilities- Perform ultrasound (US) studies and biopsy/aspiration procedures, positioning patients and providing immobilization means and patient counseling as required.
- Select the proper transducer frequency for the performance of each study, reviewing orders, preparing schedules, and consulting with attending Radiologists and Registered Nurses as needed.
- Recognize electronic equipment limitations, recognize the significance of all structures visualized sonographically, and determine artifacts as well as normal anatomy as appropriate for creating a comprehensive final study.
- Collaborate with referring physicians to plan or arrange appropriate studies when needed, maintaining daily records of exams performed.
- Protocol orders from Protocol Worklist prior to releasing orders for scheduling, prepare and assign sonographers work schedules, periodically review policies and procedures of section and provide revision as appropriate.
- Follow all National Patient Safety Goals, receive and double identify patients using appropriate criteria prior to performing the study ordered, and ensure accuracy of information and data entry while maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Capture required documentation in Radiology Information System (RIS), assist with screening patients for contraindications to study or procedure, and prepare sterile fields.
- Prepare floor stock medications, ensure sterility of surgical packs, trays, and disposables to be used in assigned area, and maintain appropriate operational understanding of transducer/probe disinfectant devices.
- Assist radiologist during procedures, capturing specific images and assisting with biopsy specimen collection, operate and understand all features and performance capabilities of the US systems and tranducers/probes.
- Post process US images and prepare final Sonographer interpretation as required, prepare images for Radiologist interpretation, and transmit images to the Diagnostic Imaging PACS system.
- Maintain working knowledge of all department equipment and devices, report equipment malfunctions appropriately, and conduct equipment performance testing.
- Assume responsibilities for the needs of patient during procedure, provide service-oriented communication with patient, explaining procedure, answering questions, and emphasize a personalized, individualized, compassionate patient care atmosphere at all times.
- Provide instructions on appropriate safety measures to patients, family members, and hospital/clinic staff as required, ensure appropriate safety precautions are followed, and adhere to policy and manufacturer recommendations for operation and use of personal protection devices when operating disinfectant devices.
- Function as part of resuscitation team during Code Blue and/or Rapid Response Team situations.
- Maintain all materials needed and linen supply on daily basis, maintain general order and cleanliness of room assigned, rotate between facilities, and share on-call responsibilities for US service areas.
- Orient and train (mentor) new personnel regarding subsection operations as needed, accept responsibilities of direct supervision of student technologists during their clinical assignments, and pursue ongoing continuing education.
- Remain knowledgeable and current regarding technological advances in the field of diagnostic medical sonography, research, develop, and formulate new techniques for ultrasound procedures, attend departmental meetings and/or inservice presentations as needed or required, and read and initial minutes of such meetings when excused absence precludes attendance.
- Review scanning methods and accuracy of subordinate staff, train and/or orient staff sonographers, monitor work performance by same methods, particularly scanning results, productivity, and report results to department manager, and correct inappropriate methods and/or results.
- Experience: Minimum four (4) years post-graduate sonography experience, including experience or successful completion of training program (pre-hire, post-hire, or on-the-job) in area of specialty, if applicable.
- Education: Completion of approved ultrasound training program recognized by CAAHEP; or one (1) year directly related experience.
- License, Certification, Registration: Basic Life Support from American Heart Association, Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certificate from American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
- Supervisor or Team Leader experience in the ultrasound field.
- Ultrasound experience in general, breast, vascular, and obstetrics imaging.
- Certifications in Abdomen, Breast, Vascular, and Obstetrics imaging by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ADRMS).
- Bachelors Degree in Allied Health or Business Management.
