Duties

As a Hydrology Field Specialist within the U.S. Department of the Interior, your responsibilities will encompass:

  • Gathering and analyzing field data.
  • Maintaining and inputting field data into digital systems.
  • Installing equipment in outdoor settings.
  • Conducting basic maintenance and troubleshooting of field instruments.

Physical Demands: This role regularly necessitates significant dexterity, agility, and physical effort, including climbing and/or working from elevated platforms; navigating hazardous terrains such as slippery riverbanks, steep rocky areas, or fast-moving water; lifting heavy objects exceeding 23 kilograms (50 pounds); and maneuvering in confined spaces.

Work Environment: While office conditions do not require special safety measures, fieldwork may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, precipitation, hazardous conditions such as ice or flooding, and irritant or toxic substances. Use of personal protective equipment such as masks, boots, goggles, or life jackets may be necessary.

  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
  • Must be suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation.
  • Recent Graduates appointment is a trial period.

  • A valid state driver's license and a safe driving record are mandatory.
  • A pre-employment medical examination is required.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Pathways Recent Graduate Program, candidates must meet the following:

  • Within the last two years, completed a degree or certificate from an accredited institution.
  • Veterans who were unable to apply due to military service may begin their eligibility period upon discharge.
  • This position involves official travel; the selected candidate must apply for a government charge card within 30 days of appointment.
  • The Recent Graduate Program lasts for one year, with potential for conversion to a permanent or term appointment.
  • Communication during the recruitment process will be conducted via email.
  • A background investigation is required, and continued employment is contingent upon successful completion.

Qualification Requirements

For GS-05: Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level.
  • Completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • A combination of education and specialized experience may also qualify.

For GS-06: Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level.
  • Completion of one year of appropriate graduate-level education.
  • A combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education may qualify.

For GS-07: Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level.
  • Completion of one year of appropriate graduate-level education.
  • A combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education may qualify.

Education

Education Requirements:

  • Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles.
  • All qualifying experience will be credited, including volunteer experience.
