Primary Responsibilities
This role is situated within the Cherokee Indian Hospital Eye Clinic. The main responsibility is to facilitate the sale of optical products and services by guiding customers in their purchasing choices, as well as measuring, adjusting, and repairing eyewear. Additionally, the role includes processing eyewear and contact lens orders, managing insurance requests, and collecting payments for clinical services under the direct oversight of the Eye Clinic Practice Manager. This position requires a high level of personal accountability to make informed decisions and operate independently.
Secondary Responsibilities
Provides technical support to the optometrist as necessary within the clinic. This role also demands a high level of personal accountability to make informed decisions and operate independently.
Key Duties
- Delivers exceptional customer service by greeting patients, identifying their needs, assisting with purchasing decisions, locating products, resolving issues, and promoting services while ensuring a safe working environment.
- Capable of troubleshooting patient optical service needs (repairs, adjustments, etc.).
- Educates patients on the significance of eye health care, adhering to safety regulations and laws (NC Board of Optometry, NC Board of Opticianry, OSHA, HIPAA, etc.) when providing optical products and services.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of products and their features, advantages, and benefits.
- Ensures the optical area is maintained according to CIHA policies and procedures.
- Manages merchandise presentation in the optical area by stocking, rotating, and organizing products, as well as removing damaged or outdated items.
- Operates equipment such as cash registers to process customer transactions using appropriate procedures for various payment types.
Patient Interaction
- Welcomes patients and conducts preliminary screenings, including case history, visual acuity, and inter-pupillary distance measurements.
- Prepares patients for examinations.
- Assists the optometrist during examinations as required.
- Provides interpretation services when necessary.
- Conducts additional tests as requested by the optometrist, including depth perception, keratometry, auto-refraction, and color vision assessments.
- Measures blood glucose and blood pressure as requested.
- Administers topical medications as instructed.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Eye Clinic Practice Manager.
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Ability to operate a computer, lens meter, pupilometer, and other equipment associated with an eye clinic.
- Proficient in basic arithmetic operations.
- Familiarity with various software applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Experience in applying relevant policies and procedures in daily tasks.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and logs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work independently or collaboratively.
Education and Experience
- A High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required, along with a minimum of 6-9 months of experience in an eye clinic.
- Approximately six months of on-the-job training is necessary to achieve proficiency in most aspects of the role.
Interpersonal Contacts
Primary interactions are with patients for the purpose of fitting and adjusting optical products. Secondary contacts include primary care providers, medical records staff, pharmacy staff, billing office staff, and contract health staff. All interactions require professionalism and courtesy.
Confidentiality
Access to confidential patient information and medical records is a key responsibility. Adherence to all confidentiality policies and procedures is mandatory.
Accuracy Responsibility
Accountable for the accuracy of demographic and insurance information entered into optical software. Errors can be identified through patient interviews and must be avoided in measurements and data entry.
Physical and Mental Requirements
This position requires attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. The role involves mobility, including bending, twisting, and lifting items weighing less than 10 pounds. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods and visually verify information.
Work Environment
The majority of work occurs in a retail and hospital environment, necessitating interaction throughout the facility. Occasional travel may be required, and immunizations are mandatory for all employees.
