We are seeking a highly skilled Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to join our Critical Care team at Dogwood Veterinary Specialty and Emergency. As an RVT, you will play a key role in the stabilization, treatment, and ongoing care of critically ill or injured patients.

Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate and intensive care for critically ill or injured animals, performing stabilization, IV fluid therapy, pain management, and monitoring of vital signs.
  • Assist in triage assessments, identifying life-threatening conditions such as shock, respiratory distress, and trauma.
  • Monitor and assess patients' responses to emergency treatment, adjusting protocols as necessary under the direction of veterinarians.
  • Utilize advanced monitoring equipment, including ECG, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, capnography, and temperature, to track vital signs.
  • Manage and monitor patients requiring mechanical ventilation or oxygen therapy, adjusting settings for tidal volume, respiratory rate, and oxygen supplementation.
  • Perform diagnostic laboratory tests, including blood gas analysis, CBC, chemistry panels, and urinalysis, to assist with diagnosis and treatment of critical patients.
  • Administer medications, including IV fluids, pain management, and antibiotics, ensuring proper dosage and timing.
  • Communicate regularly with pet owners regarding patient status, treatment plans, and progress, particularly during high-stress situations.
  • Ensure all critical care equipment is properly calibrated, sterilized, and ready for use, and assist with inventory management, maintaining medications, IV fluids, and other supplies according to hospital standards.
  • Work closely with emergency veterinarians, critical care specialists, and other veterinary technicians to provide coordinated, patient-centered care.
  • Mentor and train junior technicians, interns, or veterinary students in critical care protocols and patient management techniques.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Veterinary Technician program and Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) certification required.
  • 1-3 years of experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), preferably in critical care or emergency medicine settings.
  • Experience in critical care procedures, including mechanical ventilation and respiratory support, anesthesia monitoring, and ICU protocols.
  • Familiarity with emergency triage and trauma care, including ability to manage high-acuity patients.
  • Proficiency with advanced patient monitoring equipment, including ECG, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, capnography, and temperature.
  • Expertise in performing critical care procedures, including venipuncture, urinary catheterization, endotracheal intubation, and emergency CPR and resuscitation techniques.
