Job Summary:

As a Pharmacist - Inpatient - Allegheny General Hospital - Casual, you will optimize patient care by promoting rational, safe, and cost-effective pharmaceutical care. This includes drug dispensing, intravenous admixture program, and providing drug information. You will conduct drug therapy monitoring and implement drug therapy interventions to reduce adverse events. Additionally, you will oversee the work performed by pharmacy technicians, students, and other support staff.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Process Prescriptions:
Conduct prospective drug review on all prescriptions processed. Independently review and assess medication prescriptions to identify, prevent, and resolve potential and actual drug-related problems. Ensure that medications are accurately and efficiently compounded and dispensed. Demonstrate sound professional judgment and knowledge to resolve emergent issues.

2. Drug Information and Patient Interventions:
Provide accurate and timely drug information to other health professionals, patients, and the public. Document interventions and outcomes related to drug therapy. Collaborate with the healthcare team to manage drug therapy, protocols, and guidelines.

3. Assist in Department Management:
Assist the manager in supervising and directing the work of pharmacy technicians, students, externs, and other support personnel in daily operations. Train pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy residents, and students in their duty areas. Oversee daily inventory maintenance purchases. Ensure that all controlled substances are stored and dispensed in compliance with Federal, State, and departmental regulations.

4. Work Environment:
Contribute to the effective operation of the department through all activities, including computer functions, refill medications, generation of labels, and answering phones appropriately. Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.

5. Safety:
Participate in performance improvement and regulatory compliance efforts. Maintain an attitude that promotes and fosters an environment of safety. All steps are done in a courteous and efficient manner.

May be responsible for the following if serving as the Night Pharmacist:
Triage, prioritize, and delegate the nightly activities of the pharmacy department. Serve as the primary interface to resolve medication-related problems between pharmacy, nursing, and other disciplines. Demonstrate proficiency in troubleshooting and solving information technology, computer, and automation problems.

Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements:
Minimum

Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D)


Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Registered Pharmacist in the state of PA at hire or sit for boards and obtain licensure within 120 days.

Preferred

Hospital experience preferred.
