Counselor & Access Specialist Job Description

Job Summary:

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Counselor & Access Specialist to provide counseling, crisis intervention, and clinical outreach/educational services to the university community in Roanoke. This role requires a strong background in mental health and wellness, as well as experience working with individuals with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide counseling, crisis intervention, and clinical outreach/educational services to students, faculty, and staff
  • Coordinate accessibility services for students with disabilities and collaborate with faculty and staff to determine reasonable accommodation strategies
  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout the university to provide comprehensive support services
  • Assess and intervene in crisis situations, utilizing knowledge of counseling theory and techniques
  • Develop and implement outreach and prevention programs to promote mental health and wellness

Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in counseling, psychology, clinical social work, or related field
  • Licensed in a mental health-related discipline in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Professional clinical experience working in a community or college/university counseling setting
  • Experience in brief intervention, mental health crisis assessment, and individual/group therapy
  • Knowledge of electronic health records systems and adaptive technologies/equipment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior professional clinical experience (3-5 years) working in a university/college counseling setting
  • Demonstrated ability to provide outreach, prevention, consultation, and seminar presentations
  • Experience reviewing disability documentation and qualifying students with disabilities for academic accommodations
