Fleet Maintenance Technician Job Description

As a Fleet Maintenance Technician with the City of Rochester, New York, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our fleet of heavy and light vehicles and equipment. Your technical expertise and administrative support will be essential in managing the maintenance and repair of our fleet, ensuring that our vehicles are in good working condition and meet the highest standards of safety and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze division equipment needs and advise managers on equipment suitability and possible use of alternative types of equipment.
  • Project future equipment replacement requirements and recommend modifications for more effective and economical use.
  • Perform daily or weekly inspections of the fleet to track vehicle assignment and assess the operating condition.
  • Document information and maintain files pertaining to vehicle condition, repair expenditures, and downtime.
  • Develop preventive maintenance schedules for each type of vehicle based on equipment manuals and specifications.
  • Train and certify equipment operators and demonstrate preventive maintenance procedures to operators.
  • Enforce operators' adherence to maintenance procedures and schedules, documenting problems and reporting them to the division manager.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions and perform minor repairs and parts installations to mechanical and motor equipment.
  • Act as division liaison with the equipment repair facility, ensuring that equipment repairs are completed in a timely fashion and according to division priorities.
  • Distribute, collect, and maintain division inventories of vehicles, mechanical and power equipment, tools, parts, and supplies.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience repairing and maintaining light-duty and heavy-duty diesel equipment and hydraulic systems.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's license without airbrake restrictions at time of appointment.
