Description

Under the general oversight of the Traffic Signs and Markings Supervisor, the Traffic Control Specialist is responsible for the creation, installation, upkeep, and repair of municipal signage, which encompasses regulatory, warning, and guidance signs, as well as the application and maintenance of roadway markings and other traffic management devices.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Design, install, maintain, and repair traffic-related signage including regulatory, warning, and guidance signs.
  2. Monitor inventory levels for traffic-related materials, including data entry and tracking using software and geographic information systems (GIS), while managing supplies and equipment.
  3. Evaluate traffic signs and conduct maintenance to ensure compliance with current standards and regulations, including ensuring proper visibility around regulatory signs and maintaining intersection clearances.
  4. Assist with the installation of overhead signage on signal mast arms as required.
  5. Apply and maintain roadway markings, including site preparation and executing marking procedures for crosswalks, school zones, stop bars, etc.
  6. Establish traffic work zones, utilizing barricades, cones, and warning signs during sign/marking operations in areas with vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  7. Perform additional related tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

Required: High School Diploma or G.E.D., one year of experience with computers or additional technical training relevant to the role, and one year of experience in a related field such as traffic work zone setup and operating power tools; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to effectively perform the essential duties of the position.

Valid Class "C" driver license issued by the State of Texas.

Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions.

Familiarity with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD).

Ability to obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signs & Pavement Markings Technician Level I Certification within one year of employment.

Ability to respond to emergencies after hours.

Willingness to work a rotation schedule for Standby and On-Call after-hours support, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during severe weather events.

Must reside within a 45-minute response radius from College Station City limits.

  • Routine assignments typically involve working in extreme weather conditions, including heat, rain, and cold temperatures for extended periods.
  • Routine tasks may involve a combination of walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and standing for extended periods; the role requires the physical strength and dexterity to lift up to 80 pounds.
