Job Summary

This position is stationed in Pahrump, Nye County, Nevada, approximately 60 miles west of Las Vegas, Nevada. The successful candidate will lead a long-term ecosystem monitoring program for an endangered fish species, overseeing data entry, data integrity, and data synthesis for a Program Manager. The position requires a strong background in aquatic sciences, including fish biology, ecology, and conservation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and coordinate fish/aquatic monitoring projects, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Participate in the conservation and recovery of species of concern, including developing and implementing conservation plans.
  • Perform fish population estimates, including sampling and data analysis.
  • Act as laboratory manager for a fish/aquatics program, including preparing technical reports and coordinating research projects with federal, state, NGO, and/or academic institutions.

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet both the Basic Requirements for the Fish Biologist, 0482 series, and the Minimum Experience or Education Qualifications for the GS-09 grade level.

Basic Requirements for the 0482 Series:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher level degree with a major field of study in biological sciences that included: At least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; AND At least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields.
  • A combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, as stated above, you must possess at least one of the following Minimum Experience or Education Qualifications for the GS-09 grade level:

  • At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience MUST include all the following: Developing and coordinating fish/aquatic monitoring projects; Participating in the conservation and recovery of species of concern; Performing fish population estimates; Acting as laboratory manager for a fish/aquatics program including at least one of the following: preparation of technical reports and/or coordinating research projects with federal, state, NGO, and/or academic institutions.
  • Successful completion of at least 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree in a directly related field OR a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a directly related field.
  • Successful completion of a combination of experience and education (only graduate level education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
