Established in 1982, BLT has a comprehensive approach to real estate, having invested in, developed, owned, and managed over five million square feet of commercial properties and more than 10,000 residential units. BLT is recognized for its development of significant residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects, including the transformative Harbor Point in Stamford, CT, which represents one of the largest redevelopment initiatives on the eastern seaboard. This expansive project includes a full mile of waterfront, over 4,000 residential units, and several million square feet of commercial space. BLT's portfolio encompasses more than 100 active real estate entities, a majority stake in William Pitt Sotheby's residential brokerage with 28 offices and 1,100 agents, as well as a mortgage and insurance company and various private equity investments across the United States.

Role Summary for the Legal Counsel:
In the capacity of Legal Counsel at BLT, you will be instrumental in overseeing legal issues pertinent to our real estate operations. You will collaborate closely with the General Counsel and other essential stakeholders to deliver legal advice and ensure adherence to all applicable laws and regulations.
This position offers opportunities for professional development and advancement within Building and Land Technology.
Key Responsibilities of the Legal Counsel:
- Contract Oversight: Review and draft a variety of real estate agreements, including purchase contracts, lease agreements, and development contracts. Ensure alignment with company goals and compliance with legal standards.
- Due Diligence: Supervise due diligence activities for real estate transactions, encompassing title reviews, environmental assessments, and zoning evaluations. Identify and address potential risks.
- Compliance Management: Keep abreast of federal, state, and local regulations related to real estate. Ensure that the company's operations comply with all relevant laws.
- Litigation Oversight: Manage and supervise real estate-related litigation, including disputes involving clients, tenants, contractors, and other parties. Work in conjunction with external legal advisors as necessary.
- Transaction Support: Assist with property acquisitions, sales, and financing transactions. Ensure that all legal components are properly managed to facilitate seamless transactions.
- Corporate Governance: Support corporate governance initiatives, including board meetings, compliance documentation, and other legal corporate matters.
- Risk Assessment: Identify legal risks associated with real estate transactions and propose strategies for risk mitigation.
- Policy Formulation: Aid in the creation and implementation of company policies concerning real estate operations, compliance, and risk management.
- Collaborative Engagement: Work alongside cross-functional teams, including real estate, finance, and operations, to provide legal support and guidance.
Qualifications for the Legal Counsel Position:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law institution
- Admission to the state bar and authorization to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction
- 3-5 years of pertinent legal experience in real estate law; experience in conveyancing, financing, easements, environmental issues, and zoning or supervising outside counsel is preferred
- Familiarity with local market knowledge (Stamford + Norwalk) is required
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a team
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
