Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Financial Counselor to join our team at Northwest Surgical, a leading orthopedic and neurosurgical practice in the Portland-Vancouver area. The successful candidate will support the billing and collection process, ensuring maximum reimbursement, and provide financial counseling to patients throughout their treatment cycle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support a team environment that upholds Northwest Surgical's mission and core values.
  • Respond to patient inquiries in accordance with state and federal laws or internal policies.
  • Prepare estimates for patients and collect deposits for surgeries or procedures.
  • Review financial history to identify patient responsibility and collect payments.
  • Verify insurance eligibility, coverage, deductibles, and co-payments.
  • Screen self-pay and high-deductible/co-insurance accounts for internal financial payment options.
  • Assist uninsured and underinsured patients in obtaining public benefits or financial sponsorship.
  • Maximize reimbursement through effective collection practices.
  • Ensure proper billing procedures and HIPAA guidelines are implemented.
  • Communicate potential issues with departmental supervisors.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college-level accounting or business courses preferred.
  • Minimum two years of experience in a healthcare-related field, preferably in collections, customer service, and billing.
  • Knowledge of insurance billing procedures, collection laws, and medical terminology.
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff and team members.
  • Proficient use of computers, including MS Office applications.
  • Understanding of service excellence principles and ability to maintain a professional demeanor under challenging situations.
