Job Title: Indigenous Food Systems and Foods Sovereignty Advisor

Join the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources team as an Indigenous Food Systems and Foods Sovereignty Advisor. This exciting opportunity will allow you to work with Native American Tribes and communities to strengthen their food systems and promote food sovereignty.

About the Position

This position will be responsible for developing and delivering a robust applied research and extension program in partnership with Native American Tribes and communities. The advisor will work to strengthen Indigenous food systems and promote food sovereignty in San Diego and Riverside counties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a research and extension program that addresses the needs of Native American Tribes and communities.
  • Work with Tribal communities and coalitions to develop and implement initiatives that promote food sovereignty and strengthen Indigenous food systems.
  • Collaborate with public and private land managers, government agencies, and other stakeholders to promote food sovereignty and Indigenous food systems.
  • Develop and deliver educational programs and materials that promote food sovereignty and Indigenous food systems.
  • Conduct research and evaluation to assess the effectiveness of the program and identify areas for improvement.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in food systems, nutrition, horticulture, agronomy, urban agriculture, natural resource management, environmental science, Native American Studies, geography, community development, or a related field.
  • Lived or professional experience working with Native American Tribes and communities.
  • Experience working with clientele across a wide range of socio-economic classes and ethnicities.
  • Ability to travel on a flexible schedule as needed.
  • Valid California Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of experience working with Native American Tribes and communities around food systems and food sovereignty.
  • Passion and desire to pursue a career in Cooperative Extension.
  • Experience in building partnerships and working with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to effectively plan projects, manage teams, and design and implement an applied research and extension program.
