The School Counselor will provide guidance and support to students, teachers, and parents, helping to create a positive and inclusive learning environment. This role involves:

  • Counseling students with interpersonal social adjustment problems
  • Counseling students with academic or attendance problems
  • Conducting group counseling and classroom guidance
  • Serving as a liaison between students, teachers, parents, administrators, and the community
  • Identifying students with special needs and suggesting alternatives to meet those needs
  • Assisting students in orientation, course selection, and setting up programs of study
  • Conducting testing and interpreting results to help students understand their aptitudes, abilities, and achievement
  • Assisting students with their plans for post-high school education or vocational choices
  • Maintaining student record files
Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Current Kansas certification as a school counselor (PreK-12)
  • A minimum of three years of successful teaching experience, preferably at the secondary level
  • A strong personal commitment to promoting the effective schools program
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, administration, and parents
  • A demonstrated knowledge of effective guidance techniques
Work Environment:

The School Counselor will work in a fast-paced, highly intensive school environment, requiring the ability to work an 8-hour duty day in the location or locations assigned by the supervisor. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and is a standard acceptable level for this environment.

Terms of Employment:

This is a 186-day position, with additional 10 days and 9 hours per day. The salary is based on the KCKPS Salary Schedule, and the FSLA is exempt. The School Counselor will report to the Principal and will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy.
