Job Summary:

As a Senior Orthopedic Technician at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and support to our orthopedic team. Under the supervision of the Administrative Supervisor and/or Clinical Supervisor, you will perform orthopedic procedures, including applying casts, splints, braces, and bandages, in various areas such as the cast room, emergency room, and operating room.

You will also coordinate activities and serve as an orthopedic resource to management, internal, and external customers, including training of other orthopedic personnel, patient education, and resource for ordering supplies and equipment.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Orient Orthopedic Technicians and newly hired Senior Ortho Technicians to assist providers with routine orthopedic procedures and meet job description standards.
  • Instruct medical students and residents in plaster techniques and teach advanced plaster techniques for Orthopedic Residency Program.
  • Coordinate activities of the cast room with other clinic and hospital functions.
  • Act as a resource for non-department personnel in the care of orthopedic patients and use of traction equipment in accordance with department policies.
  • May assist providers in coordination of education programs.
  • Recommend reorder points for replenishment of rotating standard stock and non-stock cast room supplies.
  • Sign and forward purchase requisitions to department head, evaluate necessity for acquisition of new or additional equipment for the department.
  • Recommend purchases of capital equipment.
  • Evaluate new items such as plaster and ready-made braces to ensure compliance with pre-determined standards.
  • Apply all types of casts, splints, braces, bandages, and slings by determining proper positioning, angulation, and type of device according to provider instructions and pre-determined orthopedic procedures and techniques.
  • Attend to patients during follow-up visits by application of casts, splints, etc. as assessed and ordered by a provider.
  • Set up traction apparatus as directed, noting type of traction, positioning, and weight to be used.
  • Check condition of inpatients on a regular basis to determine possible problems, notify provider as necessary, and make adjustments as directed.
  • Assist provider in Operating Room in application of casts as directed.
  • Assist provider in Emergency Room, Cast Room, and Operating Room.
  • Follow sterile technique, such as removing sutures and/or staples (after RN or provider assessment) from superficial incisions, closed reduction of fractures, wound debridement, and pin insertion, applies casts as directed, positions and preps patient, assembles necessary equipment and instruments, applies proper dressing as directed, passes instruments and assists provider as directed, follows sterile technique for operating room procedures.
  • Furnish, fit, and provide written instructions to patients in the use of crutches, canes, and other devices and document in patients electronic medical record.
  • Maintain and ensure operational readiness of equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain clean and orderly work area according to established procedures.
  • Will assist the provider in all phases of orthopedic or podiatry care.
  • Promote, ensure, and improve customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills consistent with the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Experience: One year experience within the past three (3) years as an Ortho Tech and must take and pass departmental skills validation for competencies as established.
  • Education: N/A.
  • License, Certification, Registration: Basic Life Support, Orthopedic Technologist Certificate from National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists.
Additional Requirements:
  • Knowledge of orthopedic terminology and procedures required.
  • Ability to lift fifty (50 lbs.) and apply most kinds of casts, braces, and traction required.
