Job Summary

Under the direction of the Clinic Medical Director, provide general medical care and treatment to HIV/AIDS patients in a medical facility. This includes outpatient clinics, health centers, or public health agencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform physical examinations and preventive health measures within prescribed guidelines.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient's clinical problems and healthcare needs.
  • Record physical findings and formulate plans based on patient's condition.
  • Discuss cases with physicians and other healthcare professionals to prepare comprehensive patient care plans.
  • Submit healthcare plans and goals of individual patients for periodic review and evaluation.
  • Prescribe or recommend drugs or other forms of treatment such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or related therapeutic procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform complete physical examinations, including interviewing patients to obtain complete medical histories, as well as ordering, interpreting, and evaluating diagnostic tests and examinations.

Establish and document the healthcare plan and prognosis, maintaining records of each case that are detailed and complete for any physician reviewing them to evaluate the effectiveness of the plan.

Initiate drug therapy, taking responsibility for other reactions as well as therapy.

Under established guidelines, review and analyze patient records to evaluate the usage of psychotropic drugs and the quality and appropriateness of the care of mental health patients.

Effectively identify, evaluate, and address disease prevention and health promotion issues of the population in the practice while administering quality patient care.

Work in an independent and interdependent relationship with members of the medical staff, allowing for consultation, collaboration, or referral.

Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic, and long-term healthcare issues.

Educate patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues, and the use of prescribed medical treatments and/or medications.

Maintain legible, accurate, and confidential medical records, documenting all medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatment, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations consistent with NCQA, JCAHO, and state regulatory standards.

Facilitate evaluation of records by physician(s), peers, and Quality and Standards according to protocols, and receive and implement constructive directives.

Analyze new knowledge gained from conferences, workshops, professional literature, or 'hands-on training' and assimilate this knowledge into clinical practice.

May refer patients to physicians for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment.

May review the use and effects of psychotropic drugs and other medications as well as the characteristics of mental and emotional disorders.

Qualifications/Requirements

Education:

  • Regionally accredited Master's degree in nursing required.
  • Specialty in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing and completion of an approved Adult, Child, or Family Nurse Practitioner Program, and/or completion of an approved Master's level Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner's Program.

Experience:

  • 1-3 years of experience working with HIV positive patients.

Licenses:

  • A license to practice as a Registered Nurse and a certificate to practice as a Nurse Practitioner issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Knowledge/Ability/Skills:

  • Must relate well to all cultural and ethnic groups in the community.
  • Knowledge of the impact of HIV/AIDS in ethnic minority communities.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with others, particularly in a clinical setting.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity towards people living with HIV/AIDS and other marginalized individuals.
  • Skills and ability developing individual service plans, prioritizing work flow and resolve problems.
