Reporting to the Vice President of Health IT and collaborating closely with the Chief Operating Officer, the Executive Director of IT at Johns Hopkins Hospital serves as the principal IT authority.
- As the Senior IT Leader for Johns Hopkins Hospital, this role will engage with local business, clinical, and academic leadership to devise and execute strategic initiatives that align with the overarching objectives of the organization, in conjunction with the Johns Hopkins University and Health System Office of Information Technology.
The Executive Director of IT acts as the primary liaison for all IT matters at Johns Hopkins Hospital, overseeing both direct and indirect IT infrastructure support. This role includes direct management of a local team tasked with implementing new technologies and providing ongoing IT support.
In collaboration with area-specific central IT leaders, this position holds matrixed responsibilities for all local IT operations, including desktop and mobile support, networking, and telephony.
The role will partner with central IT leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable services. It will lead large-scale, complex projects that necessitate multidisciplinary coordination and significant collaboration across operational, clinical, and IT domains.Key Responsibilities:
As a member of the leadership team at Johns Hopkins Hospital, this role will contribute to or lead strategic and tactical planning efforts aimed at achieving organizational objectives by prioritizing initiatives and coordinating the assessment, deployment, and management of current and future technologies.
It will advocate for entity-specific needs within central IT while effectively communicating central IT initiatives and priorities across the organization.
This position plays a pivotal role in enterprise IT initiatives, including sharing best practices, evaluating emerging technologies, leading enterprise-wide projects that require implementation at the entity level, and taking ownership of enterprise-wide systems.
Accountable for overseeing the development, maintenance, and execution of IT resiliency and downtime plans for the region, this role will also manage the implementation of downtime drills and associated corrective action plans.
The Executive Director will devise technology solutions that anticipate the organization's needs, ensuring they are cost-effective, reliable, and compatible with both existing and emerging technologies.Proactively responding to changes in technology requirements is essential.
With a deep understanding of organizational goals, mission, and culture, this role will assess the impact and effectiveness of technology to ensure alignment with the organization's needs.
Balancing available personnel and funding resources to meet both operational and strategic imperatives is crucial. The Executive Director will recognize significant issues as they arise and take decisive leadership action.Collaborating with constituents and other IT leaders, this role will interpret customer business needs and recommend strategic investments in technology, applications, and personnel that align with the organization's goals. It will serve as the entity liaison for clinical applications.
Providing guidance for the development of technology-related policies and procedures, this position will represent IT on business-driven policy committees both within and outside of the organization.
Ensuring compliance with applicable policies, practices, and regulatory requirements is a key responsibility. The Executive Director will represent Johns Hopkins Hospital in various meetings, often with delegated authority.Advocating for the organization's interests at industry, state, and federal meetings is essential.
Managing customer relationships and satisfaction, as well as adherence to contractual obligations, is a priority.Creating and fostering a culture of exceptional customer service is vital.
Facilitating and influencing organizational strategic initiatives to achieve mission and goals is part of the role. Maintaining relationships with strategic technology vendors is also important.
This position holds direct responsibility for the design, development, and application of a portfolio of Johns Hopkins Hospital applications, along with shared responsibility for technical solutions that meet customer needs and are essential for ongoing operations.
Ensuring the continuous delivery of IT support and services through effective management of service level agreements is critical.Overseeing the development and monitoring of IT budgets across the Hospital, this role will manage current and projected capital and operating budgets, initiating corrective actions when necessary.
Providing input for ongoing operations, budgets, multi-year forecasts, and strategic and operational planning is essential.
Maximizing cost control efforts through continuous evaluation of resource allocations to achieve or exceed financial plans is a key responsibility.
Education & Experience:A Bachelor's Degree in information technology, business, or a related field is required, with an advanced degree preferred.
A minimum of ten years of progressive experience in information technology or a related field is required, including at least seven years of management experience with significant business impact, along with proven experience leading large-scale, complex projects that support the organizational strategic plan.Skills:
Ability to establish strategic direction and commit to long-range goals and short-term initiatives is essential. Advanced leadership, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills are necessary to manage and motivate staff and resources in alignment with organizational goals and group processes.
Demonstrated exemplary customer service skills and strategic thinking capabilities are required. Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are necessary to interface with various levels of management, including senior leadership and high-level external contacts. The ability to operate in a fast-paced environment, prioritize multiple activities, and respond promptly to numerous requests in a complex, highly collaborative setting is crucial. The ability to manage sensitive and confidential information and situations is vital.Professional demeanor in both formal and informal situations, with the capacity to represent the organization at state, federal, and industry panels, is expected.Knowledge:
Extensive knowledge and experience in managing and operating large-scale technology infrastructures (greater than 100,000 customers) and executing strategic planning objectives are essential. Advanced conceptual knowledge of technologies across all areas of the organization is required.
Strategic business acumen and an understanding of organizational strategy, with the ability to design information systems that fulfill that strategy, are critical.Knowledge of current systems analysis and design methodologies, as well as IT and healthcare operations, is necessary.
Experience in assessing a broad range of information solutions and products is expected. Demonstrated knowledge of leadership, conflict resolution, and change management principles is essential.
