Global Services Advisor for International Students

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the guidance of an Associate Director/Director within the Office of Global Services (OGS) at Northeastern University, the International Student and Scholar Advisor (ISSA) delivers advisory services to international students and scholars holding F/J non-immigrant status. The ISSA acts as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), utilizing the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to execute necessary functions, compile data, generate reports, and more.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ISSA INCLUDE:
- Provide advice, counsel, and support to F-1 students, J-1 students, and J-1 scholars to ensure compliance with their non-immigrant status, employment authorization, cultural integration, academic success, and personal adjustment.
- Establish, update, and maintain records for students and scholars in SEVIS, including reportable events as mandated by federal regulations.
- Stay informed about federal regulations, SEVIS procedures, Northeastern academic policies, and OGS policies to deliver timely and comprehensive guidance.
- Offer assistance to NU academic departments and key contacts regarding regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and OGS procedures.
- Guide students on practical matters such as obtaining a social security number and applying for a U.S. driver's license/state ID.
- Coordinate with relevant government agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Student & Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), the Department of State (DOS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) concerning student inquiries, data corrections, and travel.
- Design and/or deliver training on regulations for students, scholars, and relevant colleagues.
- Collaborate with academic and co-op/career advisors to support comprehensive advising for international students.
- Work with the OGS academic services and programming support team on orientation programming related to immigration compliance and the initial review of F and J regulations for new students.
- Contribute actively to the development, design, and implementation of programs and systems aimed at enhancing the international student and scholar experience at Northeastern.
- Provide consistent on-ground advising support and represent OGS at a U.S. Global network campus, including participation in campus-wide meetings and assistance with on-campus events.
- Participate in the DSO on-call rotation.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree.
- One to three years of experience as a DSO/ARO working directly with SEVIS to manage documentation, maintain records, and comply with regulatory reporting requirements.
- U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency is required to serve as a DSO/ARO.
- Familiarity with F-1 and J-1 regulations and professional experience working with international student (and scholar) populations throughout all stages of the international student experience (pre-arrival, enrollment, post-completion employment).
- Ability and willingness to multitask and develop organizational systems for managing a high-volume caseload.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Capacity to work independently in a fast-paced environment while being a contributing member of a high-functioning team.
- Understanding of privacy laws and the ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality when advising students/scholars.
- Proficiency in various computer software systems and applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web-based applications.
- Familiarity with batching systems such as SUNAPSIS.
- Strong intercultural communication and interpersonal skills.
- Prior study/work abroad or other living experience overseas.
- Knowledge of a second or third language.
- Previous experience in academic advising.
