Job Title: Alternative Education Teacher

We are seeking a highly qualified Alternative Education Teacher to join our team at the West Virginia Department of Education. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing instruction to students and ensuring they meet the learning objectives and standards for the appropriate grade level.

Job Summary:

The Alternative Education Teacher will be responsible for developing and implementing lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the West Virginia College and Career Readiness program and the district's curriculum program. The teacher will also use 21st-century technology skills to strengthen the teaching/learning process and deliver rigorous instruction to all students.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that meet the requirements of the West Virginia College and Career Readiness program and the district's curriculum program.
  • Use 21st-century technology skills to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
  • Deliver rigorous instruction to all students.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the West Virginia Department of Education and board policies.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to support school-wide academic performance goals and instructional activities.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  • Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
  • Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formative and informative testing.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Valid teaching certificate licensing the individual to teach in the specialization and grade levels, pursuant to West Virginia Code §18A-3-2.
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to West Virginia Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate.
  • Meets the qualifications outlined in West Virginia Code §18A-3-2a.
Work Environment:

The work environment is indoors, and the noise level is low to moderate (20-60 dB). The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances that affect employee productivity, safety, or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated.
