Under the supervision of the surgeon, the Operating Room Technician aids the surgeon and/or surgical assistant during surgical procedures by performing tasks such as sponging, suctioning, cutting sutures, and holding retractors.

This position also entails providing general patient care and maintaining departmental cleanliness as directed by licensed personnel.

Core Functions:

  • Team Collaboration: Establishes a collaborative relationship with all members of the surgical team and interprofessional healthcare staff, founded on trust, integrity, confidence, and respect to achieve optimal departmental outcomes.
  • Communication: Engages with the interprofessional healthcare team by actively sharing and reporting relevant patient care information in a thorough manner.
  • Work Environment: Contributes to a positive workplace atmosphere by responding constructively to requests for assistance and fostering healthy relationships within the team.

Operational Duties:

Assists in preparing the surgical room, equipment, and supplies for scheduled procedures. Collects all necessary instruments and materials for each assigned procedure, ensuring readiness prior to the surgeon's preparation.

Supports the surgeon during surgical operations, fulfilling the surgical technician role in providing assistance across various surgical disciplines, including but not limited to orthopedics, gynecology, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, urology, spine, neurology, and minimally invasive techniques.

Assists the circulating RN with the counting of sponges, instruments, needles, and other surgical items, while accurately updating surgeon preference cards.

Quality and Safety Responsibilities:

Prepares the operating room for surgical interventions, ensuring that all surgical equipment is functioning correctly and safely. Aids in the care of instruments, equipment, and supplies post-surgery.

Maintains a sterile environment during surgical procedures by preparing sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment using appropriate sterile techniques.

Reports any discrepancies in practices, established hospital and departmental policies, and standards to management, including near misses.

Financial Responsibilities:

Demonstrates self-motivation in managing time effectively and prioritizing daily tasks to minimize unnecessary overtime. Utilizes downtime efficiently and assists colleagues as needed.

Ensures the judicious use of surgical supplies, minimizing waste by confirming the necessity of items before opening them for use during surgery.

Professional Development:

Engages in departmental projects and shared governance initiatives. Identifies personal learning needs, consults with healthcare experts, and seeks continuing education opportunities to address those needs.

Actively pursues opportunities to enhance skills beyond basic competencies, focusing on continuous improvement. Regularly updates the personal development plan.

Education and Certification:

High School diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education). Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or military training equivalency is required.

Licenses and Certifications:

Certification as a Surgical Assistant (NCCSA) or equivalent, Technologist in Surgery-Certified (NCCT), Certified Surgical Technologist (NBSTSA), and Basic Life Support (AHA) certification are mandatory.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Exhibits the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform assigned duties, as determined through ongoing assessments and evaluations. Proficient in English, both spoken and written, to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and colleagues.

Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures, case progression, relevant observations, and potential complications, along with competent use of surgical instruments and supplies.

Work Attire: Scrubs are required for this position.

On-Call Requirements: Employees may be required to be on-call during emergencies.
