Job Summary:

The Water Utility Worker will perform manual labor duties and assist with routine maintenance and repair functions for one of the multiple divisions within the Aurora Water Department. This includes working with various types of maintenance and construction equipment, performing tasks such as loading and unloading tools, repairing and replacing equipment, and assisting work crews in the installation, repair, testing, and maintenance of water lines, sewer lines, stormwater lines, channels, and structures.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform manual labor duties and assist with routine maintenance and repair functions for one of the multiple divisions within the Aurora Water Department.
  • Work with various types of maintenance and construction equipment, including hand tools, shovel, jackhammer, and power tools.
  • Load and unload tools and equipment.
  • Repair and replace equipment as needed.
  • Assist work crews in the installation, repair, testing, and maintenance of water lines, sewer lines, stormwater lines, channels, and structures.
  • Perform tasks using tools such as hand tools, shovel, jackhammer, and power tools.
  • May assist with on-call shifts as needed and assist Public Works department with snow removal activities.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1-year work experience related to manual labor preferred.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate or receive training on various types of maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds repetitively.
  • Ability to work overtime, call back duty, and standby with forty-five-minute response times.
  • Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
Working Conditions:
  • Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, odors, and fumes.
  • Some work may be performed in trenches, confined spaces, and in high-traffic areas.
Equipment Used:
  • Operates equipment and vehicles common to utilities maintenance functions.
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g., vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
