Position Summary:
The Railcar Quality Assurance Specialist is responsible for conducting thorough inspections of incoming railcars and preparing detailed work orders and customer estimates. This role ensures that all repairs and modifications comply with customer specifications, as well as AAR/FRA and VLS standards. The specialist will also perform random inspections on in-process railcars to maintain high-quality standards and will review completed work to confirm adherence to initial requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure personal and team safety within the shop environment.
  • Understand and apply AAR/FRA regulations.
  • Interpret customer specifications accurately.
  • Utilize the VLS estimating system effectively.
  • Estimate repairs and modifications for railcars competently.
  • Communicate effectively with customers regarding their railcar needs and estimated timelines.
  • Read and comprehend Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Follow VLS instructions and AAR/FRA Field Manual guidelines diligently.
  • Perform all tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proactively suggest improvements for operational effectiveness.
  • Assist in training new employees in inspection and repair processes.
  • Keep supervisors informed of any issues related to estimates or potential delays.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of inspection tools and equipment.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Basic skills in mathematics, reading comprehension, and writing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial, environmental, waste, or railroad sectors is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Availability to work Monday through Friday, with potential for overtime and weekend shifts.
  • Dependable and capable of managing time effectively.
  • Willingness to assist in other departments as necessary.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is mandatory.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One to two years of relevant experience in a railcar shop or welding repair.
  • Experience in Welding and Non-Destructive Testing is advantageous.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment:
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination, and drug screening.
  • Able to stand for extended periods with limited breaks.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • Physical agility to perform tasks such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crawling.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
  • Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and potential hazards such as electrical shock and vibration.
  • Work in proximity to moving mechanical parts and in a noisy environment.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
