Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical/Neurology (Full Time, Night Shift)

Position Overview

As a Registered Nurse in the Medical Surgical/Neurology department, you will be pivotal in delivering high-quality patient care through the nursing process, which includes assessment, implementation, and evaluation. You will oversee the care plan, employ effective problem-solving techniques, and apply evidence-based practices to ensure optimal patient outcomes. This role is integral to maintaining the quality standards of a Magnet-designated institution and adhering to the Patient Bill of Rights. You will work under the guidance of the Nursing Manager/Director, providing compassionate and family-centered care within the Pediatric Med-Surg/Neurological Unit.

Essential Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse license in the State of Florida, maintained in good standing throughout employment.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification, maintained in good standing throughout employment.
  • American Heart Association PALS certification required within one year of hire, maintained in good standing throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or enrollment in a BSN program.
  • Commitment to professional development: National certification as a Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) preferred within 2-5 years of employment.
  • Minimum of one year of RN experience in a medical-surgical setting for infants is preferred.
  • Familiarity with diverse cultural beliefs and practices regarding health is preferred.
  • Experience in Neurology/Neurosurgery is preferred.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and Electronic Health Records (EHR) is preferred.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data to inform patient care decisions.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Capability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Application of evidence-based practice principles, analytical thinking, and service excellence in daily practice.
  • Flexibility to float to various nursing units while maintaining clinical excellence and high-quality service.
  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning.
Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive patient admissions, including history, assessment, and pain reassessment. Ensure accurate discharge planning in accordance with departmental and hospital protocols.
  • Perform handoff communication with the incoming RN using the SBAR method; document findings in the EHR.
  • Develop, implement, and document individualized care plans in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe and effective patient care.
  • Deliver nursing care that encompasses IV site monitoring, suctioning, specimen collection, G-tube care, and assistance with medical procedures.
  • Administer medications according to physician orders, adhering to the six rights of medication administration.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team during daily care planning rounds, fostering a Family-Centered Care environment.
  • Utilize electronic tools to enhance patient care efficiency. Respond to patient call lights promptly to ensure safety as per hospital policy.
  • Responsible for reporting critical lab values to physicians within a specified timeframe and documenting notifications in the EHR.
  • Complete thorough nursing assessments, including head-to-toe evaluations, vital signs, dressing changes, and patient repositioning.
  • Ensure proper wound care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Access and document in the electronic health record independently, following hospital guidelines.
  • Communicate and document critical lab results as per hospital policies.
  • Engage with patients and families to discuss care plans and address any concerns, ensuring their input is valued.
  • Educate families on care plans, medication administration, side effects, fall prevention, and seizure precautions.
  • Promote a safe working environment by adhering to high-quality care standards and hospital policies.
  • Ensure patient safety by placing appropriate isolation/precaution signs as needed.
  • Document patient allergies accurately in the EHR and ensure proper identification through wristbands.
  • Create incident reports for any adverse events, documenting the situation thoroughly.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to ensure safe and efficient care, minimizing medication errors and preventing falls.
