Job Summary

The RN Subsidiary will perform direct patient care activities such as lab tests, treatments, and medication administration under the direction of the physician. The RN will utilize the nursing process to assess patient conditions and direct them to the appropriate level of care using internal and external resources. Additionally, the RN will carry out clerical activities, quality control activities, and performance improvement initiatives to support the physician and practice as assigned.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Deliver direct and indirect patient care in accordance with the RN Practice Act, hospital, and/or physician practice policies, procedures, protocols, and other professional standards of care.
  2. Collect patient health care data, including vital signs, weight, chief complaint, and pain assessment, focusing on the physical, psychosocial, age, cultural, and spiritual needs of the patient.
  3. Complete initial assessments of patient health history, learning needs, and barriers, physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs, and reassess annually.
  4. Involve the patient/family and other healthcare professionals when appropriate.
  5. Complete patient care treatments/testing as ordered by the physician.
  6. Administer medications/immunizations using appropriate routes and techniques specific to the age of the patient.
  7. Comply with completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of documentation.
  8. Provide education and instruction, within their scope of practice, to patients and families.
  9. Assess the patient's readiness to learn, educational needs, and educational barriers.
  10. Provide educational material and/or instruction based on assessed needs.
  11. Document all education/instruction provided, including topic, individual provided to, and understanding.
  12. Maintain collaborative relationships with physicians to achieve desired patient outcomes.
  13. Prepare patients for examinations, treatments, and procedures.
  14. Assist the physician with treatments and procedures as requested.
  15. Provide for patient safety in compliance with hospital and physician practice policies.
  16. Utilize two forms of patient identification before implementing any form of patient care.
  17. Label all patient specimens with identifiers per policy.
  18. Use patient identifiers on all written documentation, including notes and point-of-care testing results.
  19. Assist in compliance with all regulatory agency requirements.
  20. Adhere to infection control processes, including standard precautions, to reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting infections.
  21. Participate in non-punitive medication reporting.
  22. Demonstrate leadership by utilizing the concepts inherent to the practice of professional nursing.
  23. Demonstrate an ability to solve problems independently and seek assistance from immediate supervisors when appropriate.
  24. Maintain accountability for actions taken.
  25. Delegate patient care appropriately.
  26. Effectively function as a resource person.
  27. Act as a patient advocate.
  28. Perform effectively in the role of preceptor/mentor to new hires and/or students.
  29. Assist in maintaining/decreasing organizational/departmental costs.
  30. Coordinate communication between patients/families and physician practice, pharmacies, specialists, and insurance carriers.
  31. Provide advice based on protocols and physician instructions and direct patients to the appropriate level of care.
  32. Facilitate patient access to prescription refills based on physician order.
  33. Obtain prior authorizations and/or assist with indigent programs per physician order based on the patient's financial status or insurance coverage.
  34. Support performance improvement initiatives within the physician practice.
  35. Assist in data collection as directed by the manager/physician.
  36. Incorporate into practice performance improvement initiatives that have been implemented.
  37. Maintain the environment of care.
  38. Ensure that supplies in patient care areas are replenished daily.
  39. Consistently maintain a clean and safe environment.
  40. Follow policies pertaining to daily/weekly/monthly quality control for refrigerator temperature and equipment controls.
  41. Perform point-of-care testing as ordered by the physician.
  42. Complete all quality control testing per policy and manufacturing guidelines.
  43. Use two patient identifiers, name and DOB, prior to testing.
  44. Follow appropriate procedures when collecting patient specimens.
  45. Accurately record patient test results on appropriate result forms and testing logs.
  46. Identify results that are out of acceptable range and follow up prior to performing patient testing.
  47. Prepare forms, copy records, and respond to requests per policies and procedures.
  48. Assist in maintaining the patient's record to facilitate filing and retrieval of information.
  49. Participate in staff education.
  50. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program required.
  • Strong leadership ability, independent thinking, and decision-making ability; analytical problem-solving skills, sound judgment; excellent oral and written communication skills, must be able to function in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Previous experience in an outpatient office setting.
License, Certification & Clearances
  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program required.
  • Act 33 with renewal.
  • Act 34 with renewal.
  • Act 73 Clearances.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but may serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.). Travel may be expected locally between Excela Health locations.
