Research Vessel Engineer

Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled Research Vessel Engineer to join our team at the University of Connecticut's Marine Sciences Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting onboard mechanical systems, including diesel, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. The engineer will also be responsible for constructing and repairing specialized equipment, operating cranes, winches, davits, and forklifts, and keeping records and preparing reports.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain an adequate stock of supplies
- Responsible for all maintenance and troubleshooting for onboard mechanical systems
- Stands a watch
- Constructs and repairs specialized equipment
- Operate cranes, winches, davits and forklifts
- Keeps records and prepares reports;
- Performs related duties as required.
Requirements:
- Four (4) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of gasoline and diesel engine inboard motor vessels operating both in offshore and coastal waters.
- Experience operating shipboard cranes and winches.
- Experience operating forklifts.
- Experience in similar roles on research vessels and working with scientists.
- QMED or other USCG engineering license.
- USCG Master/mate 150 ton.
- Completion of STCW 95 Basic Safety Training.
- Formal training in mechanical systems.
Working Conditions:
- Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and to discomfort from extreme weather conditions, noise, and fumes.
- The vessel operates 24 hours a day and may be away from its home port for up to two weeks at a time.
- Expected to reside in shared onboard accommodations with fellow crew members.
