POSITION: Accounting Technician
SUMMARY:
Under the general oversight of the Controller, the Accounting Technician is responsible for executing intermediate financial, statistical, and accounting tasks. This role involves generating and assisting in the formulation of financial analyses and reports, as well as maintaining electronic accounting records. This position is classified as non-exempt.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage the preparation and execution of accounts payable and/or accounts receivable.
- Maintain records for payables, receivables, retirement, and similar statistical data.
- Assist in the development of financial record-keeping and accounting systems.
- Compile complex statistical and accounting reports from various sources.
- Prepare claims for grant expenditures and manage deposits.
- Reconcile accounts and investigate discrepancies.
- Clarify regulations and procedures to various departments and respond to inquiries using independent judgment.
- Ensure strict confidentiality of both employer and employee records.
- Perform additional tasks as necessary to support departmental and organizational objectives.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A minimum of three years of experience working in a public agency with proven competency in essential job functions.
- Strong communication skills to convey complex issues to colleagues, management, and external services.
- Proficient in using personal computers and financial databases; capable of typing 40 wpm, operating a 10-key by touch, and handling business machinery.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with others.
- Capacity to manage multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities while adhering to deadlines.
LICENSES AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid California driver's license, reliable transportation, and proof of minimum California vehicle insurance.
- Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Physical capability to walk, stoop, and bend as required; ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds occasionally and to sit for up to 85% of scheduled work hours.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Associate's Degree in Accounting with two years of relevant accounting experience. Relevant work experience may substitute for educational requirements.
- Understanding of the principles and methods of detailed financial record-keeping; familiarity with payroll taxes is advantageous.
- Proficient in using EXCEL spreadsheets and accounting software.
- Ability to interpret and follow both oral and written instructions.
- Capacity to work independently and collaboratively with others.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality regarding agency and employee information.
