Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Attorney to join our team at the Department of Public Defense in King County. As a Public Defense Attorney, you will be responsible for providing high-quality legal representation to indigent clients in felonies, misdemeanors, juvenile defense, family defense, and other areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide competent legal representation to and advocacy for indigent clients, including those with limited English proficiency.
  • Engage in motions practice, including research, writing, and arguing pretrial motions.
  • Develop and implement legal strategies to address client needs, which may involve partnering with investigators, mitigation specialists, and paralegals.
  • Execute trial, research, and writing skills to effectively communicate with clients and the court.
  • Champion equity and social justice, and effectively communicate analysis to all interested parties.

Requirements:

  • Must have a valid Washington State driver's license or the ability to travel throughout King County.
  • Must be able to work in a flexible, hybrid in-office/telecommute workplace structure.
  • Must be able to handle on-call 24-hour coverage, which occurs approximately one week a year or two Saturday calendars a year.
  • Must have proficiency in languages other than English, particularly Spanish.
  • Must possess clinical training in public defense.
  • Must have lived experience involving the criminal legal system shared by DPD's clients.
