Job Summary

The Substance Abuse Counselor will support clients in developing healthy coping mechanisms and building a support network to maintain abstinence. This role involves creating individualized relapse prevention plans to ensure long-term recovery after completing the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate clients' mental and physical health, addiction, or problematic behavior and assess their readiness for treatment.
  • Assist clients in developing treatment goals and plans, including education on medically assisted treatment options and referrals to medical/psychiatric teams.
  • Review and discuss treatment options with clients and their families; collaborate with IOP staff on aftercare plans.
  • Help clients develop skills and behaviors essential for recovery or modifying destructive behaviors.
  • Work with clients to identify behaviors or situations that hinder their recovery.
  • Educate families about addiction and behavioral disorders, helping them develop strategies to cope.
  • Refer clients to external resources such as support groups and job placement services.
  • Conduct outreach programs to raise awareness of addiction signs, prevention, and recovery steps.
Requirements
  • Valid State of Maryland Licensure or Credential as a Certified Associate Counselor-Alcohol and Drug (CAC-AD).
  • 1-3 years of experience in behavioral healthcare or substance abuse settings.
  • Knowledge of case management for dual diagnosis clients.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with ICANotes (preferred).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and work under pressure.
  • Understanding of diverse cultural, gender-specific issues, and the ability to integrate these into the treatment approach.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times when interacting with clients, families, and all contacts.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills through supportive and constructive communication with coworkers, clients, families, and external contacts.
