Job Overview
As a proactive organization, BCNY prioritizes the health and safety of our members and staff. The Saturday Night Lights (SNL) program is a youth violence prevention initiative funded by the New York County District Attorney's Office. While SNL emphasizes basketball and fitness, it also integrates vital social services to assist young people in reducing violence and engaging in positive activities. Coaches will impart basketball skills while reinforcing essential life skills such as teamwork, cooperation, sportsmanship, and effective communication. Once foundational basketball concepts are taught, coaches will facilitate participation in games, scrimmages, and tournaments against other organizations.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement a balanced program of instruction that includes demonstrations and practice opportunities for students.
- Evaluate instructional content and student performance to identify strengths and areas for improvement, making recommendations for curriculum adjustments as needed.
- Utilize behavior management techniques to address and redirect inappropriate behavior.
- Participate in required departmental meetings and professional development sessions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Experience as a Basketball Instructor or Coach with youth is required.
- A strong passion for health and wellness, along with knowledge of safety and technique.
- A High School diploma or GED is required.
- Previous experience working with children is essential.
- Ability to serve as a positive role model for youth and staff.
- Demonstrated leadership skills in educational, social service, or youth development environments.
- First Aid and CPR certification is a plus.
