Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Habilitation Specialist to join our team at Helen Keller Services. As a Habilitation Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals who are DeafBlind or have a combined hearing and vision loss. Your primary responsibility will be to provide support and guidance to our residents in various areas, including communication, personal management, home management, and community skills.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of the needs and challenges faced by individuals with DeafBlindness. You will work closely with our residents to develop and implement personalized plans that promote independence, employment, and quality of life. Your expertise in behavior support and communication will be essential in creating a safe and inclusive environment for our residents.

This is a full-time position located in our group home in Port Washington, NY. The successful candidate will be required to work a variety of shifts, including evenings and weekends. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide instruction and support in areas such as personal grooming, communication, home management, and community skills.
  • Participate in programming that promotes an atmosphere conducive to growth and encourages maximum independence and interdependence.
  • Conduct regular checks on residents to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Assist residents with safe evacuation in the event of an emergency.
  • Accompany and serve as a guide and/or facilitator of communication for residents and professional staff members.
  • Become CPR and First Aid certified and dispense consumer medications after passing the AMAP course.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma
  • Four years of paid experience as a residence/group home aide working with individuals who have intellectual disabilities
  • One year of experience working with individuals who are DeafBlind, blind, deaf, or individuals with multiple disabilities
  • Valid New York State Driver's license
  • Familiarity with American Sign Language highly preferred
