Position Overview

The Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) plays a crucial role in providing care to patients undergoing surgical interventions. This role involves supporting the surgical team and ensuring optimal patient outcomes during and after procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Educate patients about what to expect during their surgical experience before transferring them to the operating room.
  • Formulate and execute individualized nursing care plans tailored to surgical patients.
  • Prepare and administer medications within the sterile environment, ensuring proper sterilization and marking of incision sites.
  • Organize the operating room for each procedure, confirming that all instruments and supplies are sterile and ready for use.
  • In a scrub role, assist the surgical team by donning sterile attire and support the surgeon by passing instruments as needed, while adhering to strict sterile techniques.
  • Safely operate and troubleshoot medical equipment to facilitate planned nursing interventions and assist staff in acquiring necessary tools.
  • After the procedure, clear the surgical area, prepare the patient for recovery transport, and provide a detailed report to the recovery nurse.
  • Oversee the ordering, upkeep, and secure storage of surgical tools and materials.
  • Perform additional tasks within the surgical suite to ensure the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
  • Document patient care accurately and promptly to ensure appropriate follow-up and billing processes.
  • Provide ongoing education within the unit as required and assist in the orientation and training of new staff members.
  • Be available for on-call duties during weekends, holidays, and nights as necessary.
  • Carry out other assigned responsibilities as needed.
Educational Qualifications
  • Required: Graduation from an accredited nursing program as a Registered Nurse (ASN).
  • Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Experience Requirements
  • Required: A minimum of two (2) years of experience in circulating and/or scrub roles across various specialties.
  • Preferred: Five (5) years or more of relevant experience.
Licensure and Certification Requirements

Required:
  • American Heart Association Certifications:
    Basic Life Support (BLS) – upon hire
    Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – within 90 days of hire or transfer.
  • Registered Nurse – must hold a valid license to practice in the state of Indiana upon hire.
