Internship Program

The pharmacy intern program at Fred Hutch is a structured, multi-year initiative designed to ensure that participants, upon completion of the program in conjunction with an accredited PharmD curriculum, are equipped to perform essential distribution and supportive clinical functions within an ambulatory oncology environment. Interns will collaborate closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy residents, and other healthcare professionals. Each year of the program has specific expectations and objectives that build upon the previous year, aligning with the professional progression of pharmacy education.

By the conclusion of the internship, participants are expected to have gained training in various areas, including but not limited to:

  • Sterile compounding of hazardous and non-hazardous medications
  • Pyxis refilling and management
  • Investigational drug services
  • Retail pharmacy dispensing
  • Patient counseling
  • Preparation, packaging, and labeling of medications accurately and efficiently
  • Charging and billing processes
  • Compliance with controlled substance procedures
  • Filling and documentation of emergency/code boxes and trays
  • Monitoring medication stock for expiration and managing outdates
  • Medication reconciliation
  • Delivery of patient-specific medications to designated areas
  • Other pharmacy-related responsibilities in accordance with state regulations
Qualifications

Required:

  • Enrollment in an accredited pharmacy program
  • Possession of a Pharmacy Intern License
  • Strong time management skills
  • Willingness to travel as necessary
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in aseptic IV admixture preparation
  • Ability to perform fundamental pharmaceutical calculations
  • Competence in using computer systems for data entry and navigation
  • Familiarity with generic drug names and their basic indications

The compensation for this position ranges from $23.04 to $25.65 per hour, with the final offer determined by experience and qualifications.
