Boiler Plant Operator

Reporting to the Central Energy Supervisor, the incumbent operates boilers in the Central Heating Plant and other university locations during heating season. The incumbent performs repair/maintenance activities as instructed.
Key duties include operating one electrical high-voltage boiler, two gas-and-oil-fired boilers, and two gas-fired boilers in the Heating Plant. The incumbent assists with boilers in other university locations as needed to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous delivery of steam and heat.
The incumbent monitors boiler operations, immediately reports any abnormalities or problems observed, makes adjustments to boilers or controls as instructed, troubleshoots problems to determine whether an adjustment is needed or there is a system failure, and makes the necessary adjustment or reports the failure.
RequirementsA high school diploma and two years of relevant experience are required. The incumbent must have a working knowledge of the techniques and procedures for operating high-pressure steam boilers. Good mechanical aptitude is necessary, as well as the ability to follow written instructions and directions. The incumbent must be able to think and act quickly in an emergency, lift up to 80 pounds, work in extreme temperatures, and around loud equipment. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, co-workers, and supervisor is also essential.
Prior experience with boiler operation and maintenance is highly desirable.
The incumbent must be able to train on first shift (7 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and move to a regular second shift (3 p.m. to 11 p.m.).
