The Opportunity:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Substation Design Electrical Engineer to join our team. As a technical lead, you will be responsible for the overall execution and quality of substation projects, encompassing distribution, subtransmission, and transmission level voltage classes.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Senior Substation Design Electrical Engineer, you will:

  • Function as a technical lead and be responsible for the overall execution and quality of substation projects.
  • Provide technical guidance over a group or supervise engineering staff on substation design projects.
  • Perform substation design, including physical design and protective relaying/control.
  • Actively participate in management, project scheduling, and work/resource planning meetings.
  • Interface directly with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers.

Engineering Standards:

You will be responsible for:

  • Developing and maintaining budgets and schedules for multiple substation design projects.
  • Performing substation design, including physical design, protective relaying/control with an emphasis on continuous improvement.
  • Providing guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes, and policies.
  • Assisting in developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards.
  • Providing technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines.

Quality/Continuous Improvement:

You will:

  • Independently apply knowledge and comply with quality program relative to assigned tasks.
  • Be responsible for ensuring compliance with quality program while performing internal Quality Assurance technical reviews.
  • Provide related guidance and direction to others.
  • Support continuous improvement and change management efforts.

Engineering Production:

You will be responsible for:

  • Preparing a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects.
  • Performing complex research and developing recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.
  • Overseeing collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work.
  • Preparing complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles.
  • Managing assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Independently applying advanced engineering techniques and analysis problems and methods.
  • Reviewing lower-level engineering work or assignments.
  • Being responsible for one or more of the following: leading larger production teams, coordinating multiple discipline activity, and serving as the responsible charge for a project.

Project Coordination:

You will:

  • Actively coordinate with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects.
  • Manage the work assignments and ensure quality from direct reports and project team(s).
  • Actively participate in management, project scheduling, and work/resource planning meetings.

Client Focus:

You will:

  • Interface directly with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on moderately complex projects.
  • Typically provide support to business development or pursuit activities.
  • People Management - (supervision, career development, training, mentoring):
  • Typically assist with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any corrective actions required.
  • May participate in career planning, and learning and development.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and direct reports.
  • Provide constructive feedback to direct reports on performance.

Resource Management - (budgets, tools, processes, project support):

You will:

  • Implement resource management strategy.
  • Manage engineering resources for small groups of a single discipline.
  • Administrative:
  • Administrative responsibilities may include office administration.
  • Ensure policies, procedures, and processes are effectively implemented and communicated for workgroup.
  • Ensure adherence to corporate and division programs.
  • May approve timesheets and expense reports.

Preferred Qualifications:

We are looking for candidates with:

  • PE License in Texas.
  • Power/Power Systems experience preferred.
  • Quality Assurance and Quality Control of substation design projects.
  • Substation design experience (physical & P&C).
  • Technical experience preferred:
    • Perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.
    • Prepare one-lines, connection diagrams, panel elevations, and protection & control schematics for power substation equipment.
    • Prepare auxiliary power equipment sizing calculations.
    • Design wiring diagrams for protective relaying panels.
    • Perform complex engineering calculations/studies related to substation projects such as: lightning protection, conduit fill, AC/DC station service loading, surge arrester sizing, and voltage drop.
    • Create RTU control, status, and analog point lists, raceway/cable schedules along with maintenance/signage and nameplates.
    • Prepare equipment arrangement, grounding, foundation, and conduit plans for high voltage substations.
    • Review shop drawings, vendor quotes, and perform bid evaluations.
    • Develop construction release documents.
    • Experience 500KV - 13.8KV substations, varying voltage classes.
    • Experience with open air and/or GIS.
    • Experience with designing different types of bus configurations.
    • Raceway drawings, grounding drawings, plan, and section drawings.
    • Manage budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Actively coordinate with others on the team. Delegate and supervise the work of younger engineers. Communicate with upper management and provide status updates on engineering design activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

We require:

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing.
  • Minimum of 8 years related work experience.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
