Responsibilities:- Provide direct support to students with special needs, including primary responsibility for their care and well-being.
- Participate in activities planned by our staff, including in-class activities and instructional training sessions.
- Assist with the preparation and development of instructional training activities and materials.
- Assist our staff with maintaining a neat and orderly classroom environment, including keeping materials and equipment organized.
- Assist our staff in maintaining a good learning atmosphere, using effective teaching and behavior management techniques.
- Under direct supervision, assist with assessing student needs and providing general impressions and observations of students.
- Work with students individually, in small groups, or whole groups, providing instruction and support as needed.
- May assist with classroom technology, adaptive devices, and equipment.
- Assist with social skills, toileting, diapering, dressing, and hygiene.
- Keep an organized and clutter-free restroom and/or changing area.
- Administer emergency treatment when necessary.
- May take children into the community or assist with feeding themselves.
- May be assigned to multiple school locations.
- Assist with playground supervision and work cooperatively with students, staff, and administration.
- Reinforce lessons and activities with small groups of learners.
- Assist with crisis intervention and discipline, and participate in program planning meetings as requested.
- Ability to understand and anticipate the needs of children.
- Ability to operate classroom technology equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children and adults.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
- Ability to show competence and assist with academic skills, such as reading and math.
- Ability to communicate orally with correct language usage.
- Knowledge of the general needs and behavior patterns of children, safe work practices, and correct English usage.
- Experience working with groups, such as youth groups, child centers, or playgrounds, and/or experience requiring organizational skills.
- Proof of High School Diploma or equivalency.
- Proof of an A.A. degree, 48 college units, or pass the Paraeducator Exam.
- Ability to commute or relocate to Downey Unified School District.
- Ability to work mornings, Monday to Friday, with no weekends.
