Job Summary

The Infection Control Preventionist is a key member of the healthcare team responsible for identifying, investigating, and preventing the spread of hospital-associated infections among patients and personnel. This role requires a comprehensive knowledge of infection control practices, including CDC guidelines, TJC standards, and federal and state regulations.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in nursing, with a minimum of 2 years of experience in infection control practice in a hospital setting. Certification by the Board of Practitioners of Infection Control and Epidemiology is preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct concurrent infection control surveillance and utilize targeted patient and employee surveillance indicators to identify areas for improvement.
  • Aggregate and analyze infection control data and present to appropriate audiences, including community awareness.
  • Develop, review, and revise infection control policies and procedures as indicated or at a minimum every 3 years.
  • Develop and implement a system for identifying, investigating, reporting, and preventing the spread of hospital-associated infections among patients of all ages and healthcare personnel.
  • Confers with staff nurses on all patient units on a regular basis to determine occurrence of hospital-acquired infections.
  • Confers with medical and nursing staff to determine appropriate implementation of isolation precautions.
  • Investigates infections, especially those occurring above established thresholds and/or in clusters by patient units.
  • Reports environmental hazards and/or implements corrective action that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Assists with in-service education related to infection prevention and control through general orientation, nursing orientation, and annual education.
  • Completes Notifiable Disease reports and forwards them to the Tennessee Department of Health in a timely and accurate manner.
Requirements
  • Current RN licensure in the State of Tennessee
  • Current BLS Certification upon hire
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in infection control practice in a hospital setting preferred
  • Certification by the Board of Practitioners of Infection Control and Epidemiology, preferred
